Band 8 IELTS Sample Essay: Social Media and Mental Health

Reading time: 1 minutes

The Prompt

Many people believe that social media platforms are damaging the mental health of young people. Others argue that these platforms offer real benefits such as connection and support. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The Essay

Social media's impact on young people's mental health has become one of the most debated topics of our time, with strong arguments existing on both sides of the discussion.

Those who believe social media is harmful point to a growing body of evidence linking heavy platform use to anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem among teenagers. Constant exposure to carefully curated images of other people's lives can fuel unrealistic comparisons, leaving young users feeling inadequate. Furthermore, the pressure to accumulate likes and followers creates a form of social validation that is both addictive and emotionally fragile, meaning that any drop in engagement can trigger genuine distress.

On the other hand, many argue that these platforms provide meaningful benefits that should not be overlooked. For young people who feel isolated — whether due to geography, disability, or minority identity — social media can offer a sense of community and belonging that might otherwise be unavailable. Online support groups for mental health conditions, for instance, have helped countless individuals share experiences and access peer encouragement. In this sense, the platforms themselves are not inherently damaging; rather, the harm depends largely on how and how much they are used.

In my view, the negative effects are real but not inevitable. The critical factor is the quality of engagement rather than the mere fact of participation. Platforms that encourage passive scrolling and social comparison tend to be more harmful, whereas those that facilitate genuine interaction and community building can genuinely support wellbeing. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with both platform designers and parents to guide young people toward healthier patterns of use.

Why This Scored Band 8

Task Achievement: 8

Your essay appropriately and sufficiently addresses the prompt by discussing both views on social media's impact and presenting a clear, well-developed position. The response demonstrates Band 8 task achievement as 'ideas are relevant, well extended and supported.' You effectively explore the harmful effects in paragraph 2 ('Constant exposure to carefully curated images...can fuel unrealistic comparisons') and the benefits in paragraph 3 ('For young people who feel isolated...social media can offer a sense of community'). Your position in paragraph 4 is nuanced and directly answers the question by arguing that 'the negative effects are real but not inevitable' and that 'the critical factor is the quality of engagement.' The essay maintains focus throughout with minimal lapses in content, meeting the Band 8 descriptor requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: 8

The message can be followed with ease, demonstrating Band 8 coherence. Information is logically sequenced with clear progression from introduction through both viewpoints to your reasoned conclusion. Cohesive devices are well managed: 'On the other hand' effectively signals the contrasting view, 'Furthermore' adds supporting detail, and 'In this sense' introduces clarification. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately with four distinct sections serving clear purposes. The phrase 'In my view' smoothly transitions to your position, and 'Ultimately' signals your final stance. Occasional minor lapses occur, such as the slightly abrupt shift to 'those platforms themselves are not inherently damaging,' but these are minimal and do not detract from overall coherence.

Lexical Resource: 8

Your essay demonstrates Band 8 lexical resource with 'a wide resource fluently and flexibly used to convey precise meanings.' Sophisticated vocabulary appears throughout: 'carefully curated images,' 'emotionally fragile,' 'genuine distress,' 'minority identity,' and 'passive scrolling.' The collocation 'growing body of evidence' is natural and appropriate, as is 'sense of community and belonging.' You show skilful use of less common items like 'fuel unrealistic comparisons' and 'facilitate genuine interaction.' Minor inaccuracies are rare - 'emotionally fragile' is slightly imprecise (perhaps 'emotionally vulnerable' would be more natural), but this has minimal impact on communication. The range and precision of vocabulary consistently support your arguments effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: 8

A wide range of structures is flexibly and accurately used throughout the essay, meeting Band 8 requirements. Complex sentences are handled with confidence: 'Constant exposure to carefully curated images of other people's lives can fuel unrealistic comparisons, leaving young users feeling inadequate' demonstrates sophisticated control with a present participle clause. The majority of sentences are error-free, including complex forms like 'For young people who feel isolated — whether due to geography, disability, or minority identity — social media can offer a sense of community.' Punctuation is well managed, including effective use of em-dashes. Occasional minor slips occur, such as the slightly awkward phrasing 'meaning that any drop in engagement can trigger genuine distress' where 'which means' might flow more naturally, but these are non-systematic and have minimal impact on communication.
