Frequently Asked Questions

How many words should my IELTS Task 2 essay be?
IELTS requires a minimum of 250 words. However, Band 6+ essays typically have 270-300 words. Going over 320 words increases risk of errors without adding value.
How many paragraphs should I have?
A standard Task 2 essay has 4-5 paragraphs: introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each body paragraph should focus on one main idea.
Do I need to state my opinion?
For "agree/disagree" and "to what extent" questions, yes. The Band 6 descriptor requires "a clear position throughout the response."
Is word count checked strictly in IELTS?
The automatic penalty for under 250 words was removed in 2018. However, short essays still score lower because you can't fully develop ideas, demonstrate vocabulary range, or show grammatical variety in fewer words. The ideal range is 270-290 words.
What can't this tool check?
This tool checks structure only. It cannot assess grammar accuracy, vocabulary range, whether you answered the question correctly, or predict your band score. For full analysis, try our AI assessment.
