Band 7 IELTS Sample Essay: University Vs Vocational
Reading time: 1 minutes
The Prompt
Some people think universities should focus on giving graduates the practical skills employers need. Others argue that the role of a university is to support knowledge and learning for their own sake. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
The Essay
There is an ongoing debate about whether universities should prioritise preparing students for the workplace or whether they should focus on developing knowledge and intellectual understanding independently of employment concerns. Both perspectives have considerable merit, though I believe a balanced approach is ultimately most beneficial.
Those who argue that universities should focus on practical skills make a compelling case. In today's competitive job market, graduates are expected to contribute immediately to their organisations, and employers frequently complain that new hires lack the technical abilities required for modern roles. If universities align their programmes more closely with industry needs, graduates are likely to find employment more quickly and experience greater job satisfaction in their early careers. Countries that have invested heavily in vocational higher education, such as Germany, have seen relatively low youth unemployment as a result.
On the other hand, supporters of knowledge for its own sake argue that the purpose of a university is fundamentally different from that of a training college. Studying philosophy, history, or pure mathematics, for instance, develops critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and the ability to approach complex problems creatively. These qualities are not always easy to quantify, but many employers actually value them highly. Furthermore, society as a whole benefits when universities produce curious, well-rounded individuals who can contribute to cultural and intellectual life beyond their immediate professional roles.
In my view, universities should not be forced to choose between these two functions. The most effective institutions manage to equip students with relevant skills while also fostering genuine intellectual curiosity. Neglecting either dimension risks producing graduates who are either poorly employable or narrowly trained without deeper understanding.
Why This Scored Band 7
Task Achievement: 7.5
Your essay demonstrates strong task response by thoroughly addressing both perspectives and presenting a clear, well-developed position. You effectively discuss the practical skills viewpoint in paragraph 2 with the specific example of Germany's vocational education system, and counter with the intellectual development argument in paragraph 3. Your position 'universities should not be forced to choose between these two functions' directly answers the question and is consistently maintained. The essay aligns with Band 7.5 descriptors: 'The main parts of the prompt are appropriately addressed' with 'a clear and developed position.' However, at 272 words, the essay is slightly constrained in demonstrating the 'fully extended' ideas characteristic of Band 8, particularly in the conclusion which could benefit from more elaboration of how institutions 'manage to equip students with relevant skills while also fostering genuine intellectual curiosity.'
Coherence and Cohesion: 8
Your essay demonstrates excellent coherence and cohesion that aligns with Band 8 descriptors: 'The message can be followed with ease' and 'information and ideas are logically sequenced.' The progression from introduction through contrasting viewpoints to your balanced conclusion is seamless. You use sophisticated cohesive devices naturally: 'On the other hand' for contrast, 'Furthermore' for addition, and 'In my view' for position statement. Your paragraphing is skilfully managed with each paragraph having a clear central topic. The referencing is particularly strong: 'These qualities' clearly refers back to critical thinking and analytical reasoning, while 'either dimension' effectively references the two functions discussed. The only minor limitation preventing Band 8.5 is occasional predictability in some transitions, though this is a very minor issue.
Lexical Resource: 8
Your lexical resource demonstrates Band 8 proficiency with 'a wide resource fluently and flexibly used to convey precise meanings.' You employ sophisticated vocabulary naturally: 'compelling case,' 'align their programmes,' 'quantify,' and 'well-rounded individuals.' Your collocations are particularly strong: 'competitive job market,' 'technical abilities,' 'intellectual curiosity,' and 'professional roles.' The phrase 'knowledge for its own sake' shows idiomatic awareness. You demonstrate skilful use of less common items like 'vocational,' 'analytical reasoning,' and 'fostering.' Word choice is consistently precise: 'prioritise' vs 'focus,' 'independently of' showing nuanced understanding. Minor improvements could include varying 'universities' with synonyms like 'higher education institutions' or 'tertiary education' to demonstrate even greater flexibility, though current usage is already strong.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: 7.5
Your essay demonstrates strong grammatical range and accuracy consistent with Band 7.5. You use a wide variety of complex structures accurately: conditional structures ('If universities align their programmes more closely with industry needs, graduates are likely to find employment'), relative clauses ('graduates who are either poorly employable'), and subordinate clauses ('though I believe a balanced approach is ultimately most beneficial'). The majority of sentences are error-free with well-managed punctuation throughout. You demonstrate control over complex forms: 'Those who argue that universities should focus on practical skills make a compelling case' shows sophisticated noun clause usage. However, there are occasional minor slips that prevent Band 8: the phrase 'knowledge and learning for their own sake' could be more naturally expressed as 'knowledge and learning for its own sake' (singular reference). These are minimal and don't impede communication, but slightly more consistent accuracy would elevate to Band 8.
