Band 7 IELTS Sample Essay: Biodiversity Loss

Reading time: 1 minutes

The Prompt

In recent years many countries have seen a sharp decline in plant and animal species. What are the main causes of this decline, and what measures could governments and individuals take to address it?

The Essay

The rapid disappearance of plant and animal species is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. This essay will examine the primary reasons behind this decline and suggest practical steps that can be taken by both governments and ordinary people.

There are two main causes of biodiversity loss. First, habitat destruction is arguably the most significant factor. As human populations grow, forests and wetlands are cleared to make way for agriculture, housing, and industry, leaving countless species without the space they need to survive. Second, climate change is increasingly threatening wildlife by altering the conditions that many species depend on. Rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns disrupt breeding cycles and reduce the availability of food sources, pushing vulnerable populations toward extinction.

Fortunately, there are several measures that could help reverse this trend. Governments have a particularly important role to play, since they have the authority to introduce and enforce environmental legislation. For example, they could expand protected areas and impose strict penalties on illegal logging or poaching. Investing in conservation programmes that restore damaged habitats would also be valuable. At the individual level, people can make a meaningful difference by adjusting their consumption habits. Choosing sustainably sourced products and reducing meat consumption, which is closely linked to deforestation, are two practical ways that citizens can lessen their impact on the natural world.

In conclusion, habitat loss and climate change are the leading causes of species decline, and addressing this problem requires action from both governments and individuals. If appropriate policies are implemented and people take greater responsibility for their choices, it is realistic to hope that biodiversity can be preserved for future generations.

Why This Scored Band 7

Task Achievement: 7.5

Your essay appropriately addresses all parts of the prompt with a clear and well-developed position. You identify two main causes (habitat destruction and climate change) and propose solutions from both governmental and individual perspectives, which directly answers both questions posed. The ideas are relevant and well-extended, as seen in your explanation that 'Rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns disrupt breeding cycles and reduce the availability of food sources.' This demonstrates Band 7.5 task response: 'A clear and well-developed position is presented in response to the question/s. Ideas are relevant, well extended and supported.' The essay maintains focus throughout and avoids over-generalisation, with each main point receiving adequate development.

Coherence and Cohesion: 8

Information and ideas are logically sequenced throughout your essay, and the message can be followed with ease. Your paragraphing is skilfully managed with a clear four-paragraph structure: introduction, causes paragraph, solutions paragraph, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and naturally, such as 'Fortunately' to transition to solutions, 'For example' to introduce specific measures, and 'At the individual level' to shift focus from government to personal action. The progression from problem identification to solution proposal is logical and well-executed. Your use of reference ('this trend,' 'this problem') demonstrates sophisticated cohesion. This aligns with Band 8 descriptors: 'The message can be followed with ease. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, and cohesion is well managed.'

Lexical Resource: 8

Your essay demonstrates a wide resource that is fluently and flexibly used to convey precise meanings. You employ sophisticated vocabulary naturally throughout: 'pressing environmental challenges,' 'biodiversity loss,' 'vulnerable populations,' 'sustainably sourced products,' and 'lessen their impact.' The collocation 'breeding cycles' and phrase 'pushing vulnerable populations toward extinction' show skilful use of less common lexical items. Your word choices are consistently appropriate and precise, such as 'impose strict penalties' and 'restore damaged habitats.' There are no noticeable errors in spelling or word formation. This performance clearly meets Band 8 criteria: 'A wide resource is fluently and flexibly used to convey precise meanings. There is skilful use of uncommon and/or idiomatic items when appropriate.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: 7.5

You demonstrate a wide range of structures used with flexibility and accuracy. Complex sentences are handled confidently: 'As human populations grow, forests and wetlands are cleared to make way for agriculture, housing, and industry, leaving countless species without the space they need to survive' shows sophisticated control of subordination and participial phrases. Your use of conditional structures ('If appropriate policies are implemented') and relative clauses ('that many species depend on') is accurate. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is well managed throughout. Minor improvements could be made in varying sentence openings further, but overall this represents strong Band 7.5 performance: 'A wide range of structures is flexibly and accurately used. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is well managed.'
