The Prompt
Some people believe artificial intelligence will transform classrooms by personalising learning for every student. Others argue that AI tools weaken critical thinking and reduce contact between teachers and learners. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
The Essay
Artificial intelligence is increasingly finding its way into educational settings, and opinions are sharply divided over whether this development is ultimately beneficial. While some see AI as a powerful tool for tailoring instruction to individual students, others worry that it undermines deeper thinking and erodes the human dimension of teaching. I believe the benefits of AI in education are real, but they depend heavily on how the technology is used.
Those who favour AI in classrooms point to its capacity to adapt content to each learner's pace and ability. A student who struggles with algebra can receive additional practice and targeted explanations, while a more advanced peer moves ahead without being held back. This kind of personalisation has traditionally been difficult to achieve in large classes, and AI tools make it far more accessible. Proponents argue that when students receive instruction pitched at the right level, both engagement and achievement improve considerably.
Critics, however, raise legitimate concerns. When students can simply query an AI system for answers, the effortful process of working through a problem independently may be bypassed. Over time, this could erode the reasoning skills that education is meant to cultivate. There is also the question of human connection. A skilled teacher does far more than deliver information; they notice when a student is struggling emotionally, inspire curiosity, and model how to think through uncertainty. No current AI system replicates these qualities meaningfully.
In my view, AI should serve as a supplement to skilled teaching rather than a replacement for it. When used to handle routine tasks and provide personalised practice, it frees teachers to focus on precisely the higher-order interactions that machines cannot replicate. The risk lies not in the technology itself but in allowing convenience to override educational judgement.
