Band 7 IELTS Sample Essay: Ai Education
Reading time: 1 minutes
The Prompt
Some people believe artificial intelligence will transform classrooms by personalising learning for every student. Others argue that AI tools weaken critical thinking and reduce contact between teachers and learners. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
The Essay
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being introduced into education, and opinions on its impact are divided. While some believe it will revolutionise how students learn by tailoring content to individual needs, others worry that it may undermine thinking skills and reduce meaningful interaction between teachers and students. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view.
Those who support AI in education argue that personalised learning is one of its greatest advantages. Traditional classrooms often struggle to accommodate students with different learning speeds and abilities, whereas AI systems can analyse each student's progress and adjust the difficulty of tasks accordingly. For example, a student who finds mathematics challenging can receive additional practice in specific areas without slowing down the rest of the class. This kind of targeted support can significantly improve academic outcomes for a wide range of learners.
On the other hand, critics raise valid concerns about the potential drawbacks of relying heavily on AI tools. When students are guided through content by algorithms, they may become accustomed to receiving instant answers rather than working through problems independently. This could gradually weaken their ability to think critically and solve complex problems without assistance. Furthermore, the human relationship between a teacher and a student plays an important role in motivation and emotional development, and excessive use of technology risks reducing this valuable contact.
In my opinion, AI has genuine potential to improve education, but it should be used as a supplement to teaching rather than a replacement for it. Teachers should remain central to the learning process, using AI tools to support their work. When implemented thoughtfully, AI and human instruction can complement each other effectively.
Why This Scored Band 7
Task Achievement: 7.5
Your essay demonstrates strong task response by appropriately addressing both perspectives on AI in education and presenting a clear, well-developed position. You directly answer the question with 'This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view' and follow through systematically. The Band 7 descriptor states that 'main parts of the prompt are appropriately addressed' with 'a clear and developed position,' which your essay achieves. Your arguments are relevant and extended - the personalised learning example ('a student who finds mathematics challenging can receive additional practice') provides concrete support. Your position in the conclusion ('AI should be used as a supplement to teaching rather than a replacement') is clear and justified. However, to reach Band 8, you could develop your ideas with slightly more depth and precision, particularly in exploring the nuances of how AI and human instruction 'complement each other effectively.'
Coherence and Cohesion: 8
Your essay demonstrates excellent coherence and cohesion that aligns with Band 8 descriptors. The message can be followed with ease, and information is logically sequenced throughout. Your paragraphing is skilfully managed with a clear four-paragraph structure: introduction, two balanced body paragraphs discussing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively - 'On the other hand' creates smooth contrast, 'Furthermore' adds supporting points, and 'In my opinion' clearly signals your position. The progression from discussing supporters' views to critics' concerns flows logically. Reference and substitution work well ('This kind of targeted support' refers back to the AI example, 'this valuable contact' refers to teacher-student relationships). The only minor area for enhancement would be varying your paragraph opening strategies slightly more to reach Band 8.5-9.0 sophistication.
Lexical Resource: 7.5
Your lexical resource demonstrates strong Band 7.5 performance with good flexibility and precision. You use sophisticated vocabulary naturally: 'revolutionise,' 'accommodate,' 'algorithms,' 'gradually weaken,' and 'supplement' show range beyond basic academic vocabulary. Collocations are generally strong ('tailored content,' 'meaningful interaction,' 'valid concerns,' 'emotional development'). The phrase 'targeted support' and 'academic outcomes' demonstrate awareness of appropriate academic style. Less common items like 'accustomed to receiving' and 'complement each other effectively' are used appropriately. However, some phrases could be more precise to reach Band 8 - 'genuine potential' is slightly informal for academic writing, and 'implemented thoughtfully' could be strengthened to 'judiciously implemented' or 'strategically integrated.' Minor improvements in collocation precision ('raise valid concerns' is good, but 'voice legitimate concerns' would be more sophisticated) would elevate this to Band 8.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: 7.5
Your essay demonstrates strong grammatical range and accuracy consistent with Band 7.5. You use a variety of complex structures accurately: 'While some believe it will revolutionise how students learn by tailoring content to individual needs, others worry that it may undermine thinking skills' shows sophisticated subordination. Conditional structures ('When students are guided through content'), relative clauses ('a student who finds mathematics challenging'), and modal verbs for nuance ('may become accustomed,' 'could gradually weaken') are all handled confidently. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is well managed throughout. To reach Band 8, focus on eliminating the few minor slips: 'opinions on its impact are divided' could be more precisely expressed as 'opinions regarding its impact remain divided,' and ensuring every complex structure maintains the same level of accuracy as your simpler sentences. Your control is strong, but achieving near-perfect accuracy in all complex forms would secure Band 8.
