Band 8 IELTS Sample Essay: Remote Work Shorter Week
Reading time: 1 minutes
The Prompt
An increasing number of companies now allow employees to work from home or to follow a shorter working week. Do the advantages of these flexible working arrangements outweigh the disadvantages?
The Essay
Flexible working arrangements, such as remote work and compressed schedules, have become increasingly common in modern workplaces. While these models offer genuine benefits for both employees and organisations, I believe the advantages ultimately outweigh the drawbacks, provided such arrangements are managed thoughtfully.
The most significant benefit of flexible working is the positive impact it has on employee wellbeing and productivity. When workers are freed from lengthy commutes and rigid office hours, they tend to experience lower stress levels and greater job satisfaction, which in turn boosts their output. A software engineer working from home, for instance, can structure their day around peak concentration periods, often accomplishing more than they would in a conventional office setting filled with interruptions. Employers also benefit from reduced overhead costs when maintaining smaller physical premises, making flexible arrangements financially attractive for companies of varying sizes.
However, these arrangements are not without their challenges. Remote working in particular can blur the boundary between professional and personal life, making it difficult for some employees to disconnect from work responsibilities. Additionally, teams that rarely meet in person may struggle to build the collaborative relationships that drive innovation, as spontaneous exchanges of ideas are harder to replicate through digital communication. Managers, too, face the challenge of evaluating performance fairly when they cannot directly observe their teams, which can create tension and mistrust if not handled carefully.
On balance, the advantages of flexible working arrangements clearly outweigh the disadvantages. The gains in wellbeing, productivity, and cost efficiency are substantial, while the challenges, though real, can largely be addressed through clear communication policies and occasional in-person meetings. As workplaces continue to evolve, flexible models seem likely to become the norm rather than the exception.
Why This Scored Band 8
Task Achievement: 8
Your essay demonstrates Band 8 task response by appropriately and sufficiently addressing the prompt with a clear, well-developed position. You directly answer whether advantages outweigh disadvantages, stating 'I believe the advantages ultimately outweigh the drawbacks, provided such arrangements are managed thoughtfully.' Your ideas are relevant and well-extended, examining both benefits (wellbeing, productivity, cost savings) and challenges (work-life boundaries, collaboration difficulties, management issues) with specific supporting details like 'A software engineer working from home, for instance, can structure their day around peak concentration periods.' The essay maintains focus throughout and reaches a justified conclusion. This aligns with the Band 8 descriptor: 'A clear and well-developed position is presented in response to the question/s. Ideas are relevant, well extended and supported.'
Coherence and Cohesion: 8
Your essay achieves Band 8 coherence and cohesion as 'the message can be followed with ease' and 'information and ideas are logically sequenced.' The four-paragraph structure (introduction, advantages, disadvantages, conclusion) creates clear progression. Cohesive devices are used skillfully: 'However, these arrangements are not without their challenges' provides smooth transition between contrasting ideas, while 'Additionally' and 'On balance' guide the reader effectively. Paragraphing is used sufficiently with each body paragraph maintaining a clear central topic. The sequencing within paragraphs is logical, moving from general claims to specific examples. Reference and substitution work well, as seen in 'these arrangements' and 'such arrangements' to avoid repetition.
Lexical Resource: 8
Your lexical resource demonstrates Band 8 proficiency with 'a wide resource fluently and flexibly used to convey precise meanings.' You employ sophisticated vocabulary naturally: 'compressed schedules,' 'overhead costs,' 'spontaneous exchanges,' and 'disconnect from work responsibilities.' Collocations are strong throughout: 'lengthy commutes,' 'rigid office hours,' 'peak concentration periods,' and 'collaborative relationships.' Less common items like 'thoughtfully,' 'premises,' and 'replicate' are used appropriately. The phrase 'blur the boundary between professional and personal life' shows skilful expression. While there are occasional opportunities for even more sophisticated choices, your vocabulary control is consistently strong with minimal impact on communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: 8
Your essay demonstrates Band 8 grammatical range and accuracy with 'a wide range of structures flexibly and accurately used.' Complex sentences are handled confidently: 'When workers are freed from lengthy commutes and rigid office hours, they tend to experience lower stress levels and greater job satisfaction, which in turn boosts their output' shows sophisticated subordination and relative clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is well-managed throughout. You use conditional structures ('provided such arrangements are managed thoughtfully'), passive voice ('are freed from'), and varied sentence openings effectively. Occasional minor slips do not impede communication, fully meeting the Band 8 descriptor of 'occasional, non-systematic errors and inappropriacies occur, but have minimal impact on communication.'
